At just 15 years old, Victor Wembanyama was already playing professionally with Nanterre 92 in the EuroCup, becoming the second-youngest player in the competition's history. Victor's story begins in a family where sport runs in the blood. The son of a former Congolese athlete and a basketball coach, he grew up in an environment where sporting excellence was second nature. Before he ever touched an orange ball, young Victor played goalkeeper in football and practiced judo, developing coordination and agility that would prove invaluable on the court.
It was alongside his mother that he truly discovered basketball, in the youth teams she coached. This hunger for challenge was confirmed when he turned down an offer from FC Barcelona, preferring to forge his own path toward excellence.
His professionalism and humility, recognized by all his coaches, stand in contrast to his alien-like physique: 7'4" with a 8'0" wingspan — measurements that defy the laws of traditional basketball. This unique combination of size and skill naturally attracted the attention of the NBA, which made him the first overall pick in the 2023 draft.
Already holding an Olympic silver medal at age 20, Victor Wembanyama embodies a new era of French basketball, where the boundaries of what is possible seem to be constantly pushed back.
