Player Profile

When Zach Edey touched a basketball for the first time as a sophomore in high school, no one could have imagined he would become the most dominant center in Big Ten history. Born in Toronto to a Chinese-Canadian mother who was a former basketball player and a white father who was a former baseball player, Edey grew up between the ice rink and the baseball diamond before discovering his true calling late in life.

This remarkable transformation accelerated when he joined the Northern Kings in AAU, then attended IMG Academy in Florida to further his development. Despite his late start, the Canadian giant quickly climbed the recruiting rankings, enough to reclassify his class and join Purdue in 2020, choosing the Boilermakers over offers from Baylor and Santa Clara.

Standing 7 feet 4 inches tall, Edey became a force of nature in the paint at Purdue. Each season marked steady improvement, culminating in his final college year when he led the Boilermakers to the NCAA Championship game. This meteoric rise of a player who had never touched a basketball before age 16 left NBA scouts thoroughly impressed.

The Memphis Grizzlies bet on this unique profile by selecting him ninth overall in the 2024 NBA Draft. Now the tallest active player in the NBA, Edey perfectly embodies the idea that it is never too late to unlock your potential. His one-of-a-kind journey, shaped by a multicultural family heritage and an unconventional path to basketball, makes him one of the most intriguing centers of his generation.
