When Ousmane Dieng steps onto an NBA court, he carries with him the legacy of an unconventional journey that has reshaped the norms of European basketball. The son of Ababacar, a former professional Senegalese basketball player, and Marie-Pierre, this native of Lot-et-Garonne grew up in an environment where the orange ball felt like a natural family calling.
Trained at Villeneuve Basket Club and then at JSA Bordeaux, Dieng quickly joined the prestigious INSEP academy in Paris, a temple of elite French sport. It was there that he refined his game as a versatile wing, notably participating in the Next Generation Tournament with the under-18 national team. But the young man had a bolder vision for his future.
In 2021, Dieng made history by becoming the first European to join the NBL Next Stars program in Australia, putting on the jersey of the New Zealand Breakers. This bold decision, which led him to turn down offers from prestigious American universities and the NBA G League Ignite, reflects remarkable maturity for an 18-year-old.
His gamble paid off: selected 11th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks before being immediately traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Dieng now splits his time between the big league and the affiliated team OKC Blue. His stint in New Zealand also helped raise the profile of European prospects in the NBL Next Stars program.
Today, accompanied by his sister Astou in this family adventure, Dieng continues to forge his path with the determination that has always defined him, embodying a new route to the global elite of basketball.
