Player Profile
When Ajay Mitchell stepped onto the court alongside Victor Wembanyama at age 17 in Nanterre 92 colors, few could have imagined he would become the second Belgian in history to lift the NBA trophy. Yet this Belgian-American point guard already possessed the determination that would carry him to the top.
The son of Barry Mitchell, a former professional basketball player, Ajay grew up with basketball in his blood. Developed at Limburg United in Belgium, he did not hesitate to cross the Atlantic to join Victory Rock Prep in Florida, aware that exposure to the American game could transform his career. That boldness paid off: his performances at UC Santa Barbara revealed a player with remarkable professional development and a meteoric rise.
Selected in the 2024 NBA Draft, Mitchell joined the Oklahoma City Thunder after a trade with the New York Knicks. His rookie season had its ups and downs: a big toe injury required surgery, but his resilience and legendary work ethic allowed him to bounce back. The Thunder showed their faith by offering him a two-year standard contract, a bet that quickly proved worthwhile.
A member of the Belgian national team since the age of 18, Mitchell embodies a generation of players capable of adapting to any basketball system. His deep faith, his strong family bonds with his sisters Alexis and Ashley, and his commitment on and off the court have shaped him into a natural leader.
In 2025, as the confetti fell over Oklahoma City, Mitchell joined D.J. Mbenga in the pantheon of Belgian NBA champions. A crowning achievement that rewards an exceptional journey, from Ans to the NBA, driven by boundless ambition and remarkable adaptability.
