When Alperen Şengün was diving into the waters of the Black Sea in Giresun, his parents envisioned him as a future swimming champion. But fate had other plans: inspired by his older brother, the young Turk traded the pool for the hardwood at the age of eight, a decision that would go on to revolutionize Turkish basketball.
The son of Kemal, a fisherman from this northeastern Turkish city, Şengün climbed the ranks with remarkable determination. After his early steps at Giresun University, he joined Banvit in 2014 following a promising scouting report. His rapid rise culminated in 2019 with a Turkish youth league championship title and an MVP trophy that already hinted at his exceptional class.
The Turkish center built his professional reputation between Bandırma and Teksüt, before breaking out under the colors of Beşiktaş during the 2020-2021 season. His impressive stats of nearly 19 points and 9 rebounds per game, crowned by another BSL MVP title, caught the attention of NBA scouts.
Selected 16th overall by the Houston Rockets in the 2021 draft, Şengün quickly became a standout with his refined footwork and exceptional court vision for a big man. His passing ability and versatility have drawn comparisons to the best playmaking centers in the league.
The first Turkish player to reach several age-related historical milestones in the NBA, Şengün continues to write the history of his country's basketball while proudly representing the Turkish senior national team.
