When Lauri Markkanen hit his first three-pointer in the NBA, few could have imagined they were witnessing the debut of the future "Finnisher" — a 7-foot giant who would revolutionize Finnish basketball. Born into a family where sports run in the blood — both his parents, Pekka and Riikka, were professional basketball players — the Vantaa native quickly built a reputation as an exceptional shooter.
His journey from the courts of HoNsU to the heights of the NCAA with Arizona revealed a rare talent: a big man capable of knocking down shots from long range with surgical precision. Top scorer at both the U18 and U20 EuroBasket championships, Markkanen already impressed with that unique combination of size and shooting touch that would earn him comparisons to Dirk Nowitzki.
Selected 7th overall in the 2017 draft and immediately traded to the Chicago Bulls, the Finn had promising but unspectacular early NBA seasons. His stint in Cleveland confirmed his potential without fully unlocking it. It was ultimately in Utah that the chemistry clicked: in 2023, Markkanen truly broke out, earning his first All-Star selection and winning the Most Improved Player award.
This spectacular resurgence made him the first basketball player in history to be named Finnish Athlete of the Year. Rewarded with a five-year contract extension with the Jazz, Markkanen continues to raise the profile of Finnish basketball, most notably at the 2023 FIBA World Cup where he led his national team with authority.
