Player Profile

When Darius Garland took his first dribbles at the age of five, it was hard to imagine that this kid from Gary, Indiana, would become one of the most promising point guards of his generation despite a journey filled with obstacles.

The son of former NBA player Winston Garland, Darius grew up in an environment where basketball ran in the family's blood. His family made the bold decision to relocate to Tennessee so he could attend the prestigious Brentwood Academy. It paid off: starting in eighth grade, he joined the varsity team and contributed to four consecutive state championships. His exceptional performances earned him the Tennessee Mr. Basketball award three times and the coveted McDonald's All-American status.

Although drawn to baseball in his youth, Garland quickly chose to dedicate himself entirely to basketball. His talent caught the attention of Bryce Drew, who had coached him at summer camps and became his coach at Vanderbilt. Ironically, that close relationship lasted only five games: a meniscus injury prematurely ended his college career, even though he had been the most highly recruited prospect in the program's history.

Nicknamed "DG the PG", Garland made the bold decision to enter the NBA Draft despite his shortened college experience. His first season in Cleveland drew criticism, but the young point guard quickly proved his resilience. His spectacular development in the following seasons, during which he established himself as a natural leader of the Cavaliers, confirmed that the setbacks had only strengthened his determination.
