Player Profile
When Giannis Antetokounmpo walked the streets of Sepolia with his brother Thanasis, selling various goods to help his family survive, few could have imagined that he would one day carry the Greek flag at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This meteoric rise has its roots in an extraordinary family story, that of a young man born to Nigerian parents — Charles, a football player, and Veronica, a high jumper — in a working-class neighborhood of Athens.
Giannis's childhood was marked by financial hardship and a complex legal status. Denied Greek citizenship until the age of 18 due to jus sanguinis laws, he finally obtained his Greek papers in May 2013, just before the NBA Draft, and then Nigerian nationality in 2015. This dual cultural identity, far from being a burden, became a strength: Giannis proudly claims both heritages, even though his surname "Antetokounmpo" is merely a Greek transliteration of his actual Nigerian family name "Adetokunbo".
Discovering basketball in 2007, he quickly rose through the ranks of the Greek league before being selected 15th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2013. His nickname "Greek Freak" reflects both his exceptional athletic abilities and his remarkable journey. Today married to volleyball player Mariah Riddlesprigger, father of two children and expecting a fourth, Giannis embodies a success story that goes far beyond sports.
The 2022 film adaptation "Rise" immortalized the Antetokounmpo family's epic journey. From statelessness to Olympic flag bearer, Giannis proves that a multiple identity can become an invaluable asset.
