When Jonas Valančiūnas brings his 7-foot frame onto the court, opponents know they are in for a battle in the paint. Since his NBA debut in 2012, the Lithuanian center has turned consistency into an art form, to the point where his double-digit scoring and rebounding performances have earned a nickname: the "JV double-double."
Selected fifth overall in the 2011 draft by Toronto, Valančiūnas quickly built a reputation as a dominant force in the paint. His formidable post game and ability to vacuum up rebounds make him one of the most respected big men in the league. But what truly sets the Utena native apart is his adaptability: as modern basketball increasingly favors long-range shooting, he has extended his game out to the three-point line — a rare evolution for a player of his size.
On the international stage, Valančiūnas has represented Lithuania since the age of 19 with the same determination. Silver medals at EuroBasket 2013 and 2015 reflect his impact at the highest level of European competition. His journey was even immortalized in the documentary "The Other Dream Team," highlighting the importance of basketball to Lithuanian identity.
After memorable stints in Toronto, Memphis, Sacramento, and Washington, Valančiūnas joined Denver in 2024.
