Player Profile

At just nine years old, Zion Williamson was already waking up at 5 a.m. to train, guided by his mother who instilled in him a remarkable work ethic. This early discipline would transform a versatile kid from North Carolina — who excelled at both football and soccer — into one of the most spectacular phenomena in modern basketball.

Named after Mount Zion on his grandmother's advice, Zion grew up in a blended family after his parents' divorce, finding in Lee Anderson, a former Clemson player who became his stepfather, an additional mentor. At Spartanburg Day School, he led his team to three consecutive state titles while becoming a national sensation through his spectacular dunks that defy the laws of physics.

A five-star recruit ranked in the top 5 nationally, even sharing AAU courts with Ja Morant, Williamson chose Duke where he dominated college basketball from his very first year. His performances earned him the most prestigious Player of the Year awards before he was selected with the first overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Pelicans.

Despite a knee injury that delayed his debut, the 284-pound power forward immediately made his mark in the NBA. In his first game, he scored 17 consecutive points in the fourth quarter, demonstrating his capacity for immediate impact. His unique combination of power, athleticism, and aerial ease continues to redefine what a player of his size can accomplish on a basketball court.

Honors & Championships

Zion Williamson has established himself as one of the most precocious offensive phenomena in NBA history, shattering early-career records set by basketball legends.

  • Joined Michael Jordan as the only players in NBA history to score 20+ points in 16 of their first 20 NBA games
  • Career averages (as of early 2024): 24.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game over more than 214 NBA appearances
  • Youngest player in NBA history to score 30 points with 90% shooting in a game (36 points against the Dallas Mavericks in 2021)
