When Trey Murphy III joined the University of Virginia in 2020, few could have imagined he would make history in American college basketball. Yet during his lone season with the Cavaliers, the forward achieved one of the rarest statistical feats in the sport: a 50-40-90 season, meaning over 50% shooting from the field, 40% from three-point range, and 90% from the free-throw line across a full season.
This outstanding performance was the crowning achievement of an already remarkable journey. The son of Kenneth Murphy, a former college player at East Carolina, Trey had shown his early talent at Cary Academy in North Carolina, where he averaged 24.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game during his senior year. At Rice University, he had already set a freshman record with 41.2% shooting from three-point range, before leading the team in scoring in his second year.
His transfer to Virginia proved to be a turning point. Playing in a tactically demanding system, Murphy refined his long-range shooting while developing his defensive versatility. This rare combination of accuracy and versatility, embodied in his 6-foot-8 frame, makes him the archetype of the modern wing player.
Selected 17th overall in the 2021 NBA Draft by Memphis and immediately traded to the New Orleans Pelicans, Murphy made his professional debut in October 2021. Recognized as a "three-and-D" specialist — the ability to shoot from three-point range and defend with intensity — he perfectly embodies the evolution of contemporary basketball toward greater spacing and versatility.
