When Rudy Gobert places his hands on the rim, his 7'8" wingspan turns the paint into an impenetrable fortress. That record-breaking wingspan, measured at the 2013 NBA Draft Combine, is the culmination of a journey forged in the humble surroundings of Saint-Quentin.
The son of Rudy Bourgarel, a former French international of Guadeloupean descent, young Gobert discovered basketball at age 11 in his hometown. His early steps at JSC St-Quentin and then Saint-Quentin BB quickly revealed an exceptional frame, which led him to join Cholet Basket as a teenager. It was there that the future center refined his game, averaging 8.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in his final French season.
The NBA took notice of this giant with seemingly endless arms. Selected 27th overall by Denver in 2013, he was immediately traded to the Utah Jazz, where the legend of "The Stifle Tower" was born. That nickname perfectly captures his ability to suffocate opposing offenses through his defensive presence alone.
Nine years later, Minnesota made a major investment in his services in 2022. In the meantime, Gobert had left his mark on the world of sports in an unexpected way: as the first NBA player to test positive for COVID-19 in March 2020, he inadvertently triggered the suspension of the entire season.
A cornerstone of the French national team, this exceptional defender continues to elevate his game with the Timberwolves, where his impact goes far beyond statistics to redefine the art of protecting the basket.
