When Derrick Jones Jr. rises toward the basket, time seems to stand still. Nicknamed "Airplane Mode" for his ability to literally take off from the floor, this 27-year-old forward has turned his aerial talent into a genuine NBA calling card.
It all started at Archbishop John Carroll High School in Pennsylvania, where Jones Jr. etched his name into the school's history by becoming its all-time leading scorer with 1,645 points. His outstanding performances earned him multiple Player of the Year honors during his final high school season.
His time at UNLV proved more challenging. Despite respectable averages (11.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game), eligibility issues related to standardized testing disrupted his college career. Going undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft, Jones Jr. refused to give up and signed with the Phoenix Suns.
His professional journey is a perfect illustration of perseverance. After Phoenix, he found his footing with the Miami Heat, where he made a significant contribution to their run to the 2020 NBA Finals. That same year, he crowned his athletic prowess by winning the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, cementing his reputation as a virtuoso of the skies.
