Player Profile
Before making his mark on the basketball court, Matas Buzelis was making waves in the swimming pools of Illinois. This future NBA forward held the state's best times in breaststroke for the under-10 and under-12 age groups, a discipline that shaped the coordination and athletic fluidity that define his game today.
Born to Lithuanian parents who were both professional basketball players, Buzelis grew up in an environment where sporting excellence ran in the family. His grandfather had played for the prestigious Žalgiris Kaunas, while his grandmother excelled at handball in Lithuania. This dual American-Lithuanian background has shaped his identity as a player, leading him to commit to the Lithuanian national team in 2022.
His academic journey took him from Hinsdale Central High School to Brewster Academy, then to Sunrise Christian Academy, before he made the bold choice to join the NBA G League Ignite rather than go to college. That decision paid off: selected 11th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft by his hometown Chicago Bulls, he came full circle by joining the team.
Standing 6'9", Buzelis impresses with his versatility and natural feel for the game. In January 2025, he became the first Lithuanian and the first Bulls player since 2007 to compete in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, perfectly showcasing his spectacular potential. With his EuroBasket 2025 debut on the horizon wearing the Lithuanian jersey, this young prodigy skillfully navigates between his two basketball cultures.
