Player Profile
Nikola Vučević's life changed forever on a January morning in 2006, when the train he was traveling on derailed near Bioče, Montenegro. A survivor of a tragedy that claimed 47 lives, the 15-year-old center found in basketball the strength to overcome that trauma.
Born in Switzerland during his father's European playing career, Vučević grew up between Belgium and Montenegro before settling in Bar in 2003 to develop his basketball skills. After the accident, his family made a decisive choice: moving to California in 2007. At Stoneridge Prep, and then at the University of Southern California, the multilingual young man forged his unique style, blending European technique with American intensity.
Selected 16th overall in the 2011 NBA Draft by Philadelphia, Vučević quickly found his footing in Orlando, where he spent nine seasons becoming one of the most complete centers in the league. His ability to score from anywhere on the floor, combined with his natural rebounding instincts, made him a formidable and widely respected player.
Traded to the Chicago Bulls in 2021, the Montenegrin international has continued to perform at a high level, demonstrating remarkable longevity in a league where few players sustain their excellence for so long. His journey, defined by resilience in the face of adversity, illustrates how sport can turn hardship into a driving force.
