Player Profile
When Donovan Mitchell Jr. gets his hands on a basketball, it's "Spida" who takes over. This nickname, inherited from a former AAU coach, fits perfectly for this guard whose quick movements and athleticism are reminiscent of a spider's agility on its web.
Son of Donovan Sr., a former professional baseball player who played in the minor leagues and worked with the New York Mets, young Mitchell grew up in the world of elite sports. MLB locker rooms held no secrets for him, and his childhood idols were Scott Kazmir and David Wright. This closeness to sporting excellence shaped his character, but it was a wrist injury that ultimately steered his destiny toward the hardwood.
At Brewster Academy, Mitchell revealed his versatility: two national prep school basketball championships, but also performances on stage in the school's musical productions. This cultural richness continued at the University of Louisville, where he wore number 45 as a tribute to Michael Jordan.
Selected 13th overall in the 2017 NBA Draft by Denver and immediately traded to Utah, Mitchell quickly burst onto the scene. His spectacular style peaked with his victory at the 2018 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, confirming that "Spida" knows how to spin his web at the highest level. Beyond the court, his philanthropic commitments in education and youth empowerment reflect a maturity inherited from his mother Nicole, a teacher of Panamanian descent. From summers spent at the legendary Rucker Park to the heights of the NBA, Mitchell continues to write his story with the same explosive intensity.
