The Portland Trail Blazers delivered a statement win when it mattered most, defeating the Los Angeles Clippers 114-104 on Tuesday night in a crucial Western Conference showdown. The victory pulled Portland within striking distance of a coveted playoff position, closing the gap to just half a game behind the Clippers for eighth place.
Jrue Holiday led the charge with 30 points, connecting on seven 3-points to fuel Portland’s offensive attack. Deni Avdija was equally impressive, recording 28 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists in a dominant all-around performance that showcased his versatility on both ends of the floor.
Blazers seize control early and never look back
Portland took command late in the first quarter when Matisse Thybulle connected on a 3-pointer with 1:06 remaining, giving the Trail Blazers a 31-29 lead they would never relinquish. The momentum continued into the second quarter as Avdija sparked a decisive 16-2 run with five consecutive points before setting up teammates Toumani Camara and Kris Murray with assists.
The Trail Blazers extended their advantage to as many as 19 points and maintained control throughout the contest. Los Angeles managed to trim the deficit to eight points when Darius Garland scored in the lane with 3:44 left in the third quarter, but the Clippers could get no closer. Scoot Henderson capped a 16-5 run with a step-back 3-pointer at the buzzer, sending Portland into the fourth quarter with a commanding 91-74 advantage.
Portland’s dominance on the boards proved decisive, as the Trail Blazers held a commanding 48-30 rebounding advantage. The team’s relentless pursuit of second chances resulted in 18 offensive rebounds and 32 second-chance points, continuing their league-leading performance in that category at 18.2 points per game.
Clippers’ winning streak comes to an end
The loss snapped Los Angeles’ five-game winning streak and dealt a significant blow to their playoff positioning. Kawhi Leonard paced the Clippers with 23 points and eight rebounds, extending his streak of 20-point games to 52 consecutive contests – the second-longest active streak in the NBA behind Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Camara contributed 17 points for Portland, while Henderson added 15 points in the victory. For Los Angeles, Garland finished with 20 points, Brook Lopez scored 18, John Collins added 17, and Jordan Miller chipped in 16 points. The Clippers’ struggles were compounded by 14 turnovers and their inability to match Portland’s intensity on the glass.
With both teams now sitting at 39-37 and 39-38 respectively, the race for Western Conference playoff positioning remains tight. The season series between these teams will conclude April 10th in Portland, with Los Angeles currently holding a 2-1 advantage.
