The Denver Nuggets survived a scare in Salt Lake City on Monday night, defeating the Utah Jazz 128-125 behind Jamal Murray‘s explosive 45-point performance. Murray’s scoring outburst, which included eight 3-points, proved crucial as the Nuggets held off a surprisingly competitive Jazz team missing most of their regular rotation players.
Murray was unstoppable throughout the contest, shooting 13 of 19 from the field while making the go-ahead free throws with 31.8 seconds remaining. His third-quarter surge was particularly impressive, as he scored 18 points on five 3-points during that frame to help Denver build a 100-93 lead entering the final period.
George matches Murray shot-for-shot in losing effort
Utah’s Keyonte George, playing just his second game after missing three weeks due to ankle sprains, matched Murray’s shot-making prowess with 36 points on 14-for-22 shooting. George connected on four 3-points in 30 minutes of action and gave the Jazz a 122-118 lead with a dunk with 2:13 remaining.
The game’s dramatic finish featured several controversial moments involving Nikola Jokic, who finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds. George was denied two potential go-ahead free throws with 16.3 seconds left when what initially appeared to be Jokic’s sixth foul was reversed to a blocked shot after a lengthy review. Jokic then sealed the victory with two free throws with 6.1 seconds remaining, before George’s last-second 3-point attempt missed.
Depleted Jazz show fight despite mounting losses
Despite missing Lauri Markkanen and most of their starters due to injury, the Jazz never allowed Denver’s lead to reach double figures. Kyle Filipowski contributed 19 points while Ace Bailey added 18 for Utah, which has now lost six straight games and dropped to 18-43 on the season.
The loss continued Denver’s recent struggles, as they had lost three of four games entering Monday’s contest, including a 117-108 defeat to Minnesota on Sunday night. The back-to-back games appeared to take their toll on the Nuggets, with Julian Strawther providing 15 points and Jonas Valanciunas adding 13 points to support Murray and Jokic.
The Jazz’s competitive effort, despite their depleted roster, showcased the development of their young players as they continue what appears to be a natural rebuilding process. With the fifth-best lottery odds currently, Utah will look to bounce back when they visit the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday, while Denver returns home to host the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday.
