The Philadelphia 76ers found a way to win despite missing key players, defeating the Utah Jazz 106-102 in a thrilling contest that came down to the final seconds. Quentin Grimes proved to be the hero, sinking two crucial free throws with 16.4 seconds left to break a tie and secure the victory for the short-handed 76ers.
Philadelphia entered the game without several key contributors, including Joel Embiid, who missed his third straight game with a strained right oblique, VJ Edgecombe due to a lower back contusion suffered in Tuesday’s loss to San Antonio, and suspended Paul George. Despite these absences, the 76ers managed to maintain their sixth-place position in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Late-game drama decides the outcome
The game’s defining moments came in the final minutes, with Utah holding a 100-94 advantage with 4:51 remaining after Keyonte George connected on a 3-pointer. However, the Jazz offense went cold at the worst possible time, missing their next six field goal attempts and allowing Philadelphia to claw back into contention.
Adem Bona‘s follow dunk with 1:50 left tied the game at 100, setting up a frantic finish. Isaiah Collier briefly restored Utah’s lead with a layup 46 seconds later, but Grimes answered with a driving score to knot the game once again with 46.8 seconds on the clock. After George misfired on a long-range attempt, Grimes was fouled and calmly converted both free throws to give Philadelphia the lead.
Utah coach Will Hardy opted not to call timeout, and Kyle Filipowski‘s wide-open 3-point attempt fell short, sealing the Jazz’s seventh consecutive defeat. The loss highlighted Utah’s ongoing struggles in close games and their inability to execute in crucial moments.
Individual performances shine despite team struggles
Tyrese Maxey led Philadelphia’s scoring effort with 25 points, while Jabari Walker contributed 22 points and Grimes finished with 16 points to complement his clutch free throws. For Utah, Keyonte George delivered an outstanding performance with 30 points on efficient shooting, going 10-of-24 from the field and 5-of-11 from 3-point range.
The Jazz also received solid contributions from their young players, with rookie Ace Bailey adding 12 points and Isaiah Collier chipping in 18 points and 5 assists as a backup point guard. However, Utah was severely undermanned, missing key players including Lauri Markkanen, Walker Kessler, and Jusuf Nurkic due to various injuries.
The 76ers will look to build on this momentum when they visit Atlanta on Saturday, while the Jazz will attempt to snap their losing streak against Washington on Thursday.
