At 12 years old, Moussa Diabaté had never touched a basketball. Today, this Parisian center of Malian and Guinean heritage plays in the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets, embodying one of the most meteoric rises in modern French basketball.
Raised by his mother in a financially challenging part of the French capital, the eldest of five children discovered his passion late in life, encouraged by friends who urged him to make the most of his natural height. This late start shaped his character early on: Diabaté learned quickly and well. At 14, he crossed the Atlantic to join the prestigious Montverde Academy in Florida, then IMG Academy.
The adjustment proved tough. The language barrier and the American style of play presented major challenges for the young Parisian. But his rapid development quickly caught the attention of recruiters. He earned a spot at the Basketball Without Borders Global Camp during the 2020 NBA All-Star Weekend, then shone at the prestigious McDonald's All-American Game and Jordan Brand Classic.
His time at the University of Michigan confirmed his potential. An undecided student between literature and science, Diabaté showed far more determination on the court, proudly representing France with the U16 and U18 national teams. The Los Angeles Clippers selected him with the 43rd pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.
Now on a Two-Way contract between Charlotte and Greensboro in the G League, Diabaté continues to write his remarkable story.
