Rudy Gobert signs huge double-double against Warriors, Moussa Diabaté and Charlotte blow out Philadelphia

Rudy Gobert delivered a remarkable performance on Monday, January 26, recording an impressive double-double of 15 points and 17 rebounds in the Minnesota Timberwolves’ commanding victory over the Golden State Warriors (108-83). The French center was the spearhead of a collective response after the previous day’s heavy defeat.
A contrasting French dominance in the NBA
Seven French players took to NBA courts on Monday, with varying fortunes. Moussa Diabaté and Tidjane Salaün contributed to the Charlotte Hornets’ blowout win against the Philadelphia Sixers (130-93). Diabaté compiled 12 points and 5 rebounds on 6/7 shooting in 20 minutes, while Salaün added 7 points and 6 rebounds on 3/5 shooting in 12 minutes of playing time.
The other French representatives had more mixed results. Noah Penda managed only 2 points and 3 rebounds with the Orlando Magic, defeated by the Cleveland Cavaliers (114-98). Sidy Cissoko and Rayan Rupert, both playing for the Portland Trail Blazers against the Boston Celtics (102-94), each scored 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in their team’s loss.

Gobert at the heart of the Timberwolves’ response
Rudy Gobert’s performance was crucial in this prestigious victory. The Picard native scored nearly half of his points (7) in the first quarter, setting the foundation for his team’s dominance. Shooting 5/8 from the field, he also rounded out his stat sheet with 2 blocks, 1 steal, and 2 assists, including one to Julius Randle who finished with a spectacular dunk.
This performance marks Gobert’s 21st double-double of the season, with his 17 rebounds being his second-best performance of the year. He had only done better twice this season, with 18 rebounds against Indiana in October and then against Milwaukee in December.

Joan Beringer, the Timberwolves’ other Frenchman, also contributed with 6 points and 4 rebounds in just 10 minutes of play. This victory ends a five-game losing streak for the Wolves, their longest such streak since December 2022. Still 6th in the West, Chris Finch’s team will try to build on this successful collective performance.
