Coby White Takes Advantage of LaMelo’s Departure to Sign 3-Year Extension with the Hornets

It was a busy day in Charlotte. Just a few hours after the announcement of LaMelo Ball‘s trade to the Timberwolves in exchange for Naz Reid, the Hornets quickly turned the page by officially announcing the extension of Coby White. According to Shams Charania, the guard will sign a fully guaranteed three-year, $74 million contract.

A Homecoming for the North Carolina Native
For Coby White, joining Charlotte already felt like a return home. Born in North Carolina and a product of the University of North Carolina, the 26-year-old had reconnected with his roots last February when he was traded from Chicago. And clearly, he loved the experience. « Obviously, I love being here, » he told Roderick Boone of the Charlotte Observer. « First and foremost, the people. The staff, the support staff, the medical staff, the weight room staff — just getting to know all these people, they’re great to be around. They create a fun environment. An environment where every day you want to come in. You never know what you’re going to find. »
Jeff Peterson, President of Basketball Operations for the Hornets, had made his desire to retain him clear very early on. « He fits perfectly into the Carolinas culture, » he told ESPN in late March. « We’re thrilled to have been able to bring him back home. » This mutual affection certainly pushed the franchise to accelerate the LaMelo trade.
A Starting Role and Real Responsibilities
In 21 games with Charlotte this season, White averaged 15.6 points, shot 39.1% from three-point range, and dished out 3 assists per game off the bench. His most memorable moment was a three-pointer with 10.8 seconds left in regulation against the Heat, which forced overtime in a 127-126 victory during the NBA play-in.

Now without Ball on the roster, White naturally inherits the starting point guard role. He is expected to play alongside Kon Knueppel in the backcourt, with Brandon Miller at the wing, Naz Reid at power forward, and Moussa Diabate in the frontcourt. A more balanced starting five for a franchise that won 44 games this season, its best record since 2015-2016.
Financially, the move is also a smart one. By shedding Ball‘s contract and re-signing White at a lower salary, Charlotte gives itself valuable flexibility to continue building its roster. Kon Knueppel is still on his rookie deal for three more years, and no large contracts loom long-term. The Hornets have the means to match their ambitions, and Coby White will be the one leading the charge.
