Player Profile
When Nickeil Alexander-Walker stepped onto the court at Toronto's Scotiabank Arena for his NBA debut on October 22, 2019, the circle closed perfectly: the Toronto native played his first professional game at home, wearing the New Orleans Pelicans jersey.
This guard's journey to the NBA courts reflects an unwavering determination. After leaving Canada to sharpen his game at three different high schools, including Hamilton Heights Christian Academy where he reunited with his cousin Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Alexander-Walker steadily made his mark. Ranked as the 74th-best prospect in his 2017 class, he chose Virginia Tech over USC and Maryland — a decision that paid off.
Over two seasons with the Hokies, his development was remarkable. From averaging 10.7 points in his freshman year, he jumped to 16.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game as a sophomore, leading Virginia Tech to the NCAA Sweet 16 and earning a Third-Team All-ACC selection. This breakout performances convinced the Brooklyn Nets to select him 17th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, before immediately trading him to New Orleans.
Since then, Alexander-Walker has accumulated a wealth of experience, passing through the Utah Jazz and the Minnesota Timberwolves before joining the Atlanta Hawks in July 2025. His defensive versatility and ability to adapt to multiple backcourt positions make him a valuable asset. That versatility also shines on the Canadian national team, where he contributed to the historic bronze medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup — the first-ever medal at a World Championship in Canadian basketball history.
