When your parents name you after an NBA legend, the pressure is immediate. Anfernee Simons carries the first name of Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway, and fate would have it that this same icon became his coach at a Team USA camp. But Simons never shied away from that symbolic responsibility.
His high school journey reflects rare determination. After a stint at the prestigious Montverde Academy in Florida, he made the bold choice to return to Edgewater High School for a bigger role, before fine-tuning his preparation at IMG Academy. This pursuit of the right challenge already revealed a strong-willed character.
A five-star prospect in the class of 2018, Simons then made a decision that would define his career: bypassing college to enter the NBA Draft directly from high school. A risky bet, especially after withdrawing his commitment from Louisville following the scandals that hit the program.
