Player Profile

At just 19 years old, Jonathan Kuminga already etched his name in history by lifting the NBA trophy with the Golden State Warriors, becoming one of the youngest champions of the modern era. A remarkable achievement for someone who left Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with a dream in his pocket and an unwavering determination.

Kuminga's journey perfectly illustrates the power of ambition. Having arrived in the United States in 2016, he moved through three schools — Huntington Prep, Our Savior New American School, and The Patrick School — to maximize his basketball development. This strategy proved fruitful: his spectacular high school performances, capped by a 40-point game at the Slam Dunk to the Beach showcase that set a record for the event, confirmed his exceptional potential.

The Congolese forward did not take the traditional path. By reclassifying from the class of 2021 to the class of 2020, he joined the NBA G League Ignite, bypassing college basketball to accelerate his path to the elite. This boldness reflects the mindset that has driven him since he first touched a ball at the age of two in his native Congo.

Basketball runs in his veins — his cousin Emmanuel Mudiay also played in the NBA — but it is his personal resilience that impresses most. Leaving alone at such a young age to chase his American dream speaks to a rare maturity, making him a source of inspiration for many young African athletes.

Now an important part of the Warriors' rotation, Kuminga continues to refine his game, driven by the same determination that took him from the streets of Goma to the top of the NBA.
