Player Profile
When Rayford Trae Young first launched three-pointers from half-court at the University of Oklahoma, few could have imagined that "Ice Trae" would become one of the most electrifying point guards of his generation. The son of Rayford Young, a former Texas Tech player who went on to play in Europe, the Lubbock native grew up mainly in Pampa, Texas, raised by his mother Candice and his grandparents during his father's absences.
Already at Norman North High School in Oklahoma, Young put up staggering numbers, averaging more than 40 points per game in his senior year. At Oklahoma, he accomplished the unprecedented feat of being the only NCAA Division I player to simultaneously lead the nation in both scoring and assists in a single season (2017-18). He even tied the NCAA single-game assist record with 22 dimes, further fueling flattering comparisons to Stephen Curry for his playing style and shooting range.
Selected 5th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft by Dallas before being immediately traded to Atlanta in exchange for the rights to Luka Dončić, Young quickly transformed the Hawks. His dazzling play, impossible pull-up shots from midcourt, and exceptional court vision made him the cornerstone of the Georgia franchise. The pinnacle of that rise came when he led Atlanta to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021.
With more than 480 NBA games under his belt, 12,220 points, and 4,748 assists, Young has cemented himself among Hawks legends. At just 26 years old, the point guard continues to write his story, fueled by the same boldness that has been rattling nets since his high school days.
