Nicknamed "KAT" or "The Big Bodega", this versatile giant grew up in Piscataway, New Jersey, guided by his father Karl Towns Sr., a former college player at Monmouth who became a coach.
Academic excellence accompanied his athletic achievements: Towns voluntarily repeated seventh grade to optimize his development, then maintained a 3.96 GPA at St. Joseph High School, where he won several state titles. This dedication earned him the Gatorade Player of the Year award in 2014. After one college season at Kentucky — where he studied kinesiology with ambitions of becoming a doctor after his playing career — Towns was selected first overall in the 2015 NBA Draft by Minnesota.
