Player Profile

When Steve Nash becomes your godfather and coaches you from childhood, destiny seems written. For R.J. Barrett, this privileged relationship with the Canadian legend was just the beginning of an exceptional journey that took him from French courts to the heights of world basketball.

Son of former professional Rowan Barrett, R.J. grew up in a world where basketball was a universal language. His childhood split between Canada and France, where his father played, gave him an international vision of the game that is reflected today in his versatile style. This global outlook took shape through unconventional training methods: Barrett did not hesitate to draw inspiration from other disciplines such as sprinting and high jump to sharpen his athletic qualities.

At Montverde Academy, the forward cemented his status as a phenomenon by leading his team to a perfect season and a national title. A single season at Duke was enough to convince NBA scouts of his potential, making him the 3rd overall pick in the 2019 draft.

But it is with the Canadian national team that Barrett has written his finest chapters. MVP of the 2017 U19 World Cup, he guided Canada to its first world title in that category. Six years later, he contributed to Canada's historic bronze medal at the 2023 World Cup, confirming his role as the leader of a golden generation.

His trade to the Raptors in December 2023 marked a symbolic return to his roots, with a remarkable debut of 19 points and 9 rebounds. With the 2024 Paris Games in his sights, Barrett continues his pursuit of international excellence while keeping his childhood dreams in mind: becoming an NBA All-Star and reaching the Hall of Fame.
