When Jaylin Williams took his first charge in the NCAA, no one knew yet that he had just written the first line of a historic page in basketball. Nicknamed J-Will, this 6'9" big man born in Fort Smith, Arkansas built a unique reputation: that of a fearless defender who never hesitates to put his body on the line.
After dominating Arkansas high school basketball by winning the Gatorade Player of the Year and Arkansas Division I Player of the Year awards, Williams continued his development at the University of Arkansas. It was there that he refined his signature specialty: taking charges. His second college season saw him become the national NCAA Division I leader in that particular statistic, demonstrating remarkable courage and basketball IQ.
Selected 34th overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2022, Williams made history by becoming the first player of Vietnamese descent to set foot on an NBA court. His mother, born in Saigon, passed on a heritage he carries with pride. Despite a hamstring injury in October 2024, the big man bounced back to take part in the Oklahoma City Thunder's 2025 NBA championship run, becoming the first champion in history with Vietnamese roots.
His three-year, $24 million contract extension — signed symbolically on his 23rd birthday — reflects the trust Oklahoma City has placed in him. Between the Thunder and their affiliate Oklahoma City Blue, Williams continues to refine his defensive game and rebounding skills, writing his name a little further into basketball history every night.
