Nikola Jokic made NBA history Saturday night in Chicago. The Serbian center for the Denver Nuggets posted 22 points, 17 assists and 14 rebounds to record his 182nd regular season triple-double, surpassing legend Oscar Robertson in the ranking of players with the most triple-doubles in league history.

« He’s a legendary player, » Jokic said about Robertson, who was the first player to average a triple-double for an entire season in 1961-1962. « Every player who enters this league knows he’s a global legend. »

A spectacular fourth quarter comeback

The game turned in the final quarter, with the Chicago Bulls leading 104-97 after closing the third quarter on an impressive 16-2 run. Chicago went scoreless for six minutes at the start of the fourth period, while Denver opened with a devastating 20-2 run to take control for good.

Jokic and Julian Strawther sealed the comeback with consecutive 3-pointers. Nuggets coach David Adelman, who has been with the organization since Jokic’s third season in 2017, remains amazed by his player: « When your center gets 17 assists in a game – that just doesn’t happen. Unless it’s him. »

The three-time NBA MVP and eight-time All-Star now has only Russell Westbrook ahead of him in the all-time rankings, with Westbrook having 207 triple-doubles. This was Jokic’s 19th triple-double of the season and his second consecutive. Jamal Murray perfectly supported his teammate with 28 points and 11 assists, while Tim Hardaway Jr. added 23 points.

The 136-120 victory allows the Nuggets to end a three-game losing streak and finish their three-game road trip on a positive note. For the Bulls, Matas Buzelis scored 21 points and Collin Sexton 17 points, but the Chicago team suffered their fourth straight loss despite starter Guerschon Yabusele continuing to shine in their high-scoring offense.
