The Boston Celtics spoiled Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s highly anticipated return, delivering a dominant 108-81 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks at Fiserv Forum. Playing his first game since suffering a calf strain on January 23rd, Antetokounmpo managed 19 points and 11 rebounds in 25 minutes, but it wasn’t nearly enough to prevent Milwaukee’s third consecutive loss.

Payton Pritchard led all scorers with 25 points off the bench, adding nine assists in a stellar performance. The Celtics received unexpected contributions throughout their lineup, with rookie Hugo González recording career highs of 18 points and 16 rebounds in just his third career start. Derrick White also contributed 18 points and nine assists as Boston improved to 41-20 on the season.

Celtics Control Game Early Despite Missing Key Players

Boston established control with a devastating 24-5 run that began late in the first quarter and carried into the second, transforming a 15-14 deficit into a commanding 38-20 advantage. The Celtics maintained their dominance throughout, leading by as many as 24 points despite missing five-time All-Star Jaylen Brown due to illness.

The Celtics’ depth proved crucial as they rested Neemias Queta after his 27-point performance against Philadelphia the previous night. Newly acquired center Nikola Vučević made his first start since joining Boston at the trade deadline, contributing 10 points, seven assists, and five rebounds.

Milwaukee briefly threatened early in the second half, cutting the deficit to nine points, but Boston responded with a crushing 15-0 run to restore order. The Bucks’ struggles were evident in their shooting, managing just 34% from the field and 35% from 3-point range when their regulars were on the court.

« We were playing great and we’ve kind of lost our way, » Bucks head coach Doc Rivers said. « I think it’s on both ends. I think offensively we had a great rhythm. And we’ve done it in spurts in the last three games but we haven’t been able to sustain. »

Bobby Portis Jr. offered a blunt assessment of Milwaukee’s recent struggles: « Playing better teams. Kind of fool’s gold for real. We won eight out of 10 playing against teams that’s bottom teams that’s trying to lose, for real right? (Now) we’re playing against some teams that’s jockeying for (playoff) position. »

Despite the disappointing result, Antetokounmpo remained positive about his return. « Right now, I’ll be honest with you, I’m just happy that I’m out there, » he said. « I’ve dealt with three injuries this year and I’m just happy that I’m doing what I love. »

The victory extended Boston’s winning streak to three games and marked their seventh win in eight contests. Milwaukee, now 26-34, continues to struggle with consistency as they fight for playoff positioning in the competitive Eastern Conference.
