The Minnesota Timberwolves delivered a statement performance at Target Center, dismantling the Denver Nuggets 113-96 in Game 3 to seize a 2-1 series lead in their first-round playoff matchup. The victory showcased Minnesota’s defensive dominance while exposing Denver’s vulnerabilities without key contributors.
Jaden McDaniels led the charge with 20 points and 10 rebounds, effectively backing up his bold claim after Game 2 when he labeled all of Denver’s players « bad defenders. » Rather than motivating the Nuggets, McDaniels’ trash talk seemed to energize his own team as they raced around Denver at every turn.
Defensive Masterclass Sets the Tone
The Timberwolves established a postseason franchise record by limiting the Nuggets to just 11 points in the opening quarter, setting the tone for a dominant performance. Minnesota’s defense suffocated Denver from the start, as the Nuggets missed 16 of their first 18 shots and never found their rhythm.
Rudy Gobert continued his inspired play against three-time MVP Nikola Jokic, keeping the Denver superstar uncomfortable throughout the night. Jokic finished with 27 points and 15 rebounds but struggled on 7-for-26 shooting, missing his first six attempts. Jamal Murray fared even worse, managing just 16 points on 5-for-17 shooting as the Nuggets’ two best offensive players were neutralized by Minnesota’s elite defense.
The absence of Aaron Gordon due to left calf tightness proved costly for Denver, as they allowed 40 points in the paint during the first half alone while scoring just 39 total points in that span. The Timberwolves led 61-39 at halftime, effectively putting the game away early.
Balanced Attack Powers Minnesota
Ayo Dosunmu emerged as the game’s leading scorer with 25 points and nine assists off the bench, showcasing why he was one of the most impactful trade deadline acquisitions this season. The guard exposed Denver’s transition defense with his straight-line speed and finished a perfect 10-for-12 inside the arc.
Donte DiVincenzo contributed 15 points and four steals, while Anthony Edwards managed 17 points despite spending most of the evening in foul trouble and developing a limp in the fourth quarter. The Wolves’ depth and versatility allowed them to maintain their dominance even when their star player was limited.
Denver’s supporting cast failed to step up in Gordon’s absence, with Christian Braun finishing scoreless on no field goals and Cam Johnson managing just six points. The Nuggets’ inability to generate consistent offense outside of Jokic highlighted their dependence on Gordon’s energy and two-way impact.
Game 4 tips off Saturday at 6:30 p.m. MT at Target Center, with Gordon’s status uncertain for the crucial contest.
