Miami Heat president Pat Riley delivered a definitive message about his future with the organization during his annual end-of-season press conference. The 81-year-old executive emphatically stated his intention to continue leading the franchise’s pursuit of another NBA championship.
« I’m not going to retire. I’m not going to resign, » Riley told reporters. « I’m not going to step aside. When I came here almost 31 years ago, I have the same attitude as I had in that press conference on the [cruise ship] Imagination. Period. I want another parade down Biscayne Boulevard. It may come. It may not. »
Disappointment fuels determination for roster changes
The Heat‘s season ended in disappointment with a 127-126 overtime loss to the Charlotte Hornets in the 9-10 play-in game on April 14th. This marked the fourth consecutive season Miami has started the postseason in the play-in tournament, ultimately missing the playoffs entirely for the first time since the 2018-2019 campaign.
Riley expressed his frustration with the current state of the franchise while maintaining his commitment to winning. « I’m really pissed, » Riley said. « I’m disappointed. Disgruntled. Just like everybody else in the organization that understands what we are about — about winning. The last three or four years, with exception of the ’23 season when we got all the way to the Finals, has been something that I am not, we are not proud of. »
The Heat president made it clear that tanking is not an option under his leadership. « I am not going to tank. We are not going to lose. We are not going into the lottery and do that insanity because I will quit — if I ever get ordered to go down that road. I am always thinking of ways to win, » Riley stated.
Building around Bam Adebayo remains the priority

Despite the disappointing season, Riley remains committed to building the franchise around center Bam Adebayo, who he considers untouchable in trade discussions. When asked about potentially trading their best player like other franchises have done, Riley was adamant about keeping Adebayo.
« They’re not Bam, » Riley replied when comparing Adebayo to players like Trae Young, Domantas Sabonis, and Pascal Siakam who were traded by their respective teams. « I don’t think they are. Not in my opinion anyhow. Especially with your franchise pillar, anchor-maker, culture-carrier and a talented guy. I am just going to give you a flat-out no, I wouldn’t do that. Unless somebody gave me eight picks and [San Antonio’s Victor] Wembanyama. »
Riley confirmed that Tyler Herro, who played only 33 games this season due to injuries, underwent a « preemptive procedure » on his foot but will be ready for training camp. The Heat will have roster flexibility this summer with a lottery pick for the first time since 2018 and several key decisions to make regarding player extensions and free agency.
