When Kelly Olynyk was growing up in Toronto, he was already competing on the court against young talents like Cory Joseph and Stephen Curry, never imagining they would all end up in the NBA. This early exposure to elite competition was no coincidence: the son of Ken, a former college basketball player, and Arlene, an accomplished volleyball player, sport ran through his veins.
His unconventional path shaped his uniqueness. After moving to Kamloops in British Columbia, this future 7-foot center first developed point guard skills before playing quarterback in American football, until a broken arm brought him back to basketball for good. This early versatility explains his exceptional court vision for a big man today.
At Gonzaga, Olynyk took a redshirt year to refine his game — a patient decision that paid off: drafted 13th overall in 2013, he went on to play for eight NBA franchises, from the Boston Celtics to the current New Orleans Pelicans, including an NBA Finals appearance with Miami in 2020. A graduate in accounting, he brings the same discipline to the court as he did to his studies.
But it is with the Canadian national team that Olynyk has written his finest chapters. As captain of the national squad, he led his teammates to a historic bronze medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, the first-ever world medal for Canadian men's basketball. This collective achievement crowns a decade of loyalty to his country, confirming that Olynyk excels at elevating those around him just as much as showcasing his own technical abilities.
