Spurs retain veteran to back up De’Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama

Jordan McLaughlin continues his journey with the San Antonio Spurs. The 6-foot-0 point guard has signed a new one-year contract worth $3 million, according to ESPN. A logical extension for this 28-year-old veteran entering his seventh NBA campaign.

Seeking continuity in the rotation

Arriving midseason last year as part of the trade involving De’Aaron Fox, McLaughlin played 18 games for the Spurs, averaging about 7 minutes per game. Modest statistics that reflect his backup role, but the player impressed the coaching staff with his professionalism.

With Chris Paul’s departure and the transfer of the Branham-Wesley duo to Washington, the Spurs needed to strengthen their backcourt rotation. McLaughlin brings his experience alongside De’Aaron Fox and rookie Stephon Castle, offering a reliable option off the bench.

An experienced profile at a smart price

Over his NBA career, McLaughlin has averaged 4.1 points, 2.8 assists, and 1.4 rebounds per game. After spending five seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves and a stint with the Sacramento Kings, he represents a reliable value for San Antonio.

This signing aligns with the Spurs’ strategy, who recently strengthened their frontcourt with the arrivals of Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk. With only 13 players under contract after the Washington trade, the Texas organization still has two roster spots available to complete their squad for the 2024-2025 season.
