No extension for Trae Young in Atlanta!

The Atlanta Hawks and their star Trae Young will not discuss a contract extension this summer, according to NBA journalist Jake Fischer. This decision comes as other star point guards like De’Aaron Fox have recently signed lucrative extensions.

A complex contractual situation for the All-Star point guard
Young was eligible for a four-year, $229 million extension with the Hawks. However, according to Fischer, « league sources tell me there are no plans for Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks to engage in extension discussions this summer. »
The player’s camp seems to have long resigned to playing out the final guaranteed year of his current contract, rather than signing an extension exceeding $200 million. Young will then have to make a decision regarding his $49 million player option for the 2026-2027 season.
Young’s reported disappointment mainly stems from the fact that the Hawks never really addressed the extension question. The point guard remains confident in his ability to lead Atlanta back to the playoffs, which could be a significant turning point for both parties.
Encouraging future prospects despite uncertainty
Despite this tense contractual situation, several factors favor a future agreement. Young maintains a « strong relationship » and « real synergy » with coach Quin Snyder, according to Fischer. Additionally, the Hawks strengthened their roster this summer by acquiring Kristaps Porzingis, Luke Kennard, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
Last season, Young posted impressive averages of 24.2 points and 11.6 assists per game, leading the NBA in assists. If Atlanta makes the playoffs and Young earns All-NBA selection, he could be eligible for a five-year extension worth around $350 million.
This waiting strategy could ultimately prove beneficial for the 25-year-old point guard, who is betting on his future performance to maximize his contract value with a now strengthened and ambitious Hawks franchise.
