Josh Giddey and the Bulls: Deadlock over his Chicago extension

Josh Giddey remains at an impasse with Chicago. The 22-year-old Australian point guard and the Bulls are playing a game of poker in complex negotiations, but both sides ultimately want to reach an agreement for the 2025-2026 season.

Josh Giddey finds himself in a delicate situation this summer. A restricted free agent, the 22-year-old Australian point guard is among players like Jonathan Kuminga or Cam Thomas who are struggling to reach an agreement with their franchise. The Bulls reportedly offered a four-year contract worth $80 million, or $20 million per season, but Giddey is aiming for closer to $30 million annually.

Without an offer meeting his expectations, the Australian is now threatening to sign the « qualifying offer » for one season, which would allow him to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. A risky strategy but one that could pay off in a more favorable market.

Mutual Interest Despite Tensions

Despite this poker game, insider Jake Fischer reveals there’s a mutual desire to reach an agreement between both parties. The Bulls absolutely don’t want to lose Giddey without compensation in a year and aren’t considering a « sign-and-trade » to move him immediately.

For his part, the former Oklahoma City Thunder talent has found his place in Illinois. After the trade of Zach LaVine, Giddey shined with averages of 20.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 8.3 assists. He knows he’s in a favorable environment for his development, with the opportunity to have an important role in the team’s rebuild.

Chicago’s encouraging statistics when Giddey played alongside Coby White, Kevin Huerter and Matas Buzelis (+11.7 points per 100 possessions) reinforce the mutual interest. While the young Australian also showed improvement in 3-point shooting last season (37.8% success rate), his future All-Star potential remains intact.

The outcome of these negotiations could ultimately come down to details: shorter contract duration or slight salary increase. But all signs point to Giddey wearing the Bulls jersey in 2025-2026.
