An exceptional trading card has just shattered all records. The 2007-2008 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Dual Logoman Autographs Jordan & Bryant, numbered 1-of-1, sold Saturday night for $12.93 million (11 million euros) at a Heritage Auctions sale.

This astronomical amount surpasses the previous record held by a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card, sold for $12.6 million in August 2022. The buyer’s identity hasn’t been revealed, but this acquisition makes this unique piece the second most expensive sports collectible in history, behind Babe Ruth’s 1932 World Series jersey sold for $24.12 million.

A « Holy Grail » for modern collectors

This card presents absolute rarity: it contains autographs from both NBA legends and Logoman patches from their official jerseys. Jordan’s patch notably comes from the special gold jersey from the NBA‘s 50th anniversary in 1996-1997, a season where he led the league in scoring with 29.6 points per game.

Chris Ivy, Heritage’s Sports Director, emphasizes the historical importance of this piece: « This is the only time you’ll find Logoman cards signed by Jordan and Kobe. It’s impossible to create another one. Modern basketball collectors have always considered it a Holy Grail. »

The Upper Deck Exquisite collection, launched in 2003-2004 at $500 per five-card box, had revolutionized the market. « Many laughed, but it reached an audience that didn’t want gimmicks: they simply wanted the best of the best, » explains Ivy.

This record sale symbolically occurs on Kobe Bryant’s birthday and confirms the explosion of the trading card market. The previous most expensive NBA card, a LeBron James Exquisite Collection rookie, had reached $5.2 million. This new record more than doubles that amount and permanently anchors Jordan and Bryant in sports collectibles history.
