Spain claimed gold at the U16 Women’s EuroBasket this Saturday in Pitesti (Romania), after a 62-47 victory in the final against Slovenia. With this title, La Roja completes a historic triple after already winning the U18 and U20 Women’s EuroBasket this summer.

Spain, who also won bronze at the U19 World Cup (only losing in the semifinals to the United States), firmly establishes itself as the dominant nation in European women’s youth basketball. At the senior level, the Spanish team narrowly missed gold, after a disappointing end to the final against Belgium.

An eleventh U16 title for Spain

The Spanish team controlled their final against Slovenia thanks to a blazing start (12-0 at the beginning). Led by Isabel Hernandez (named tournament MVP with 19 points in the final, 13.7 points average), the team coached by Moses Fernández secured their 11th title in this category.

This success ends nine years of waiting as Spain hadn’t won the U16 Women’s EuroBasket since 2016.

A triple crown unprecedented since… Spain in 2013

By winning U16, U18 and U20, Spain achieves a triple that only… Spain had accomplished before, in 2013. This demonstrates the power of their youth development program.

Slovenia takes home their first medal in this category, a historic achievement. Germany completes the podium after winning the third-place game against Latvia (71-66), while France has to settle for 7th place.

Qualifiers for the 2026 U17 World Cup

Thanks to this top 5 finish, Spain, Slovenia, Germany, Latvia, and Serbia will participate in the 2026 U17 Women’s World Cup. France will be absent from this edition for the first time since 2012.

Conversely, Belgium, Finland, and Great Britain are relegated to Division B.
