The Detroit Pistons continue to strengthen their roster after returning to playoffs with 44 wins last season, their best record since 2015-2016. The Michigan franchise has just announced the arrival of Duncan Robinson from the Miami Heat, as part of a sign-and-trade.

An Elite Shooter to Replace Malik Beasley

The 31-year-old forward commits to three seasons with the Pistons for $48 million, with a partially guaranteed second year and a non-guaranteed third year. To complete this deal, Detroit sent Simone Fontecchio to Miami, allowing the Heat to reduce their financial obligations while getting a one-year contract worth $8.3 million.

This signing addresses an urgent need for the Pistons in perimeter positions. Malik Beasley, a key element in Detroit’s successful run last season, is under FBI investigation for illegal betting on NBA games, ending extension negotiations between both parties.

Robinson brings exactly what the Pistons were looking for: experience and deadly three-point shooting. The New Hampshire native boasts a 39.7% career success rate from behind the arc and is coming off a solid season with Miami, averaging 2.6 three-pointers per game at 39.3%. He started 37 games last year, averaging 11 points, 2.4 assists, and 2.3 rebounds.

After seven seasons with the Heat, two NBA finals, and over 1,200 three-pointers, Duncan Robinson will experience a new environment while staying in the Eastern Conference. His return to Michigan, where he studied in college, represents a symbolic choice for this undrafted player who has established himself as one of the league’s best shooters.

This acquisition aligns with the Pistons’ offensive strategy around Cade Cunningham and confirms the franchise’s ambitions to extend their playoff presence next season.
