The Phoenix Suns can breathe a little easier. Devin Booker will be re-evaluated in one week after suffering a right ankle sprain Friday during the loss against Atlanta (110-103). The announcement was made by the organization before Sunday night’s game against Miami.
The injury occurred in the final five seconds of the third quarter, when Booker stepped on the foot of Onyeka Okongwu of the Hawks. An unfortunate play that temporarily deprives Phoenix of their best player, who is averaging 25.4 points and 6.2 assists this season.
This one-week re-evaluation doesn’t guarantee an immediate return, but it’s probably the best-case scenario for the Suns. If Booker is cleared to resume training by then, it suggests an early February return with a maximum of eight games missed.
The news is actually quite encouraging. Booker was spotted at Mullet Arena watching his young teammates Khaman Maluach and Rasheer Fleming with the affiliate team. Stephen PridGeon-Garner noted that he was wearing shoes, without a brace or crutches. A positive development that aligns well with the official announcement.
Jeff Ayers, Valley Suns commentator, was optimistic: « It’s really good to see him in shoes, without a brace or anything. I’m really optimistic about this one-week re-evaluation. »
The Suns are beginning a five-game homestand that will extend through next Sunday. Eight of their next ten games will be played in Phoenix, which could facilitate the return of their four-time All-Star. The team will have to manage without their offensive leader, but hope for a quick return remains intact according to the initial medical information provided.
