Player Profile
When Onyeka Okongwu brings his 6'10" frame onto the court, few opponents dare venture near the rim. This power forward/center for the Atlanta Hawks has built his reputation on relentless defense and lethal efficiency around the basket, but his journey to the NBA holds a deeper story marked by tragedy and resilience.
It all began at Chino Hills High School, where the young Californian played alongside the Ball brothers during his first two years. Together, they achieved the remarkable feat of a perfect 35-win, no-loss season, crowned by a CIF Open Division State Championship. Okongwu carried that winning momentum forward by leading his team to three Division I State Championships, closing out his high school career with an impressive record of 116 wins and 24 losses.
But behind those successes lies a deep wound: the loss of his older brother Nnamdi, also a basketball player, who had profoundly shaped his path. That hardship forged the humble and hardworking character that defines the player he is today.
At USC, Okongwu made an immediate impact in his college debut with a performance of 20 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 blocks — enough to convince the Atlanta Hawks to select him with the 6th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft after just one college season.
Since then, the Los Angeles native has established himself as a formidable rim protector, combining defensive presence with efficient finishing on offense. His NBA profile continues to grow, driven by a work ethic that honors his brother's memory and fuels the ambitions of a franchise in the midst of rebuilding.
