Seattle Storm Co-Owner Celeste Keaton Suspended 5 Home Games After Fan Confrontation Over Sophie Cunningham Signs

The WNBA acted swiftly. Two days after a confrontation involving Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton and a pair of fans at Tuesday’s Storm-Fever game, the league announced Thursday that Keaton has been suspended from attending the team’s next five home games. An undisclosed fine was also handed down.

According to multiple reports, Keaton verbally admonished two fans who had brought signs into Climate Pledge Arena in support of Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. The fans told unDividedPod.com that Keaton directed expletives at them over a sign that thanked Cunningham « for speaking up for girls. »

A controversy rooted in Cunningham’s comments on transgender athletes

The incident is directly tied to remarks Cunningham made in an ESPN article published the previous week, in which she voiced support for barring transgender girls and women from girls’ and women’s sports. Prior to Tuesday’s game, a few dozen people had gathered outside Climate Pledge Arena to support Cunningham and to promote a Washington state ballot initiative that would bar transgender students from participating in girls’ athletics. Some carried signs supporting the Fever guard, while others wore T-shirts depicting XX and XY chromosomes.

Cunningham was not made available by the Fever for postgame questions, but she addressed the situation on social media Wednesday, taking direct aim at Keaton. « I truly believe there is a safe space and love for EVERYBODY. Biological girls, biological boys, trans women, and trans men. Everyone is welcome at my table! You can disagree and still be kind. Bravo to those girls for standing up for what they believe. You’ll be hearing from me soon … yay for gifts. Truly embarrassing of the co-owner. Unfortunately shows the type of leader she is, » she wrote on X.

The Storm responded Thursday with a brief statement: « We respect the league’s decision to fine and suspend co-owner Celeste Keaton. We remain committed to creating a welcoming and respectful environment for anyone who attends a Storm game. » The day before, majority owner Ginny Gilder had already apologized, saying the team is « committed to creating an inclusive environment where every fan is treated with respect. »

Storm head coach Sonia Raman, speaking after the game — a seventh consecutive loss for Seattle — struck a measured tone: « Seattle and this organization and Climate Pledge, we always want to be an area where people feel welcome coming into this building. I know our organization was working closely with Climate Pledge and the security just to make sure that everybody feels safe and included and welcome when they walk in this door. »

On the Indiana side, a Fever public relations representative intervened when coach Stephanie White was asked about the rally and Cunningham’s comments, reading a prepared statement: « Neither our organization nor Sophie had any knowledge of this demonstration and no contact with its organizers. Our only goal as a team, whether at home or away, is to win basketball games and make Fever fans for life, and we are united in that mission. »
