NBA: Winter storm, two games postponed Sunday

The winter storm sweeping across a large part of the United States has forced the NBA to revise its Sunday schedule. Two games have been officially postponed: the Nuggets at Memphis and the Mavericks at Milwaukee, with no new dates announced yet.

Extreme weather conditions in Memphis

In Memphis, the decision to postpone the game against Denver was made due to « adverse weather conditions in the Memphis area ». The Tennessee city was particularly affected by this storm combining snow and freezing rain, with maximum temperatures of only -8°C on Sunday.

The postponement announcement came less than three hours before the scheduled tip-off, even though both teams and the officiating crew were already present at FedExForum. Local authorities recommended limiting travel due to ice blocking roads and causing power outages.

Dallas stuck on the tarmac

For the Dallas-Milwaukee game, the issue was different. The Mavericks were unable to reach Wisconsin, remaining stuck on the tarmac in Dallas for hours due to icy conditions. The freezing temperatures prevented the aircraft from being de-iced, making takeoff to Milwaukee impossible.

This winter storm has also impacted other sports, notably women’s college basketball with the postponement of Baylor’s game against Houston, originally scheduled for Sunday. However, the NFL made no changes to its schedule.

The NBA nevertheless adjusted its calendar by moving up two Monday games: Indiana-Atlanta will now start at 7:30 PM (French time) and Philadelphia-Charlotte at 9:00 PM, allowing better accessibility for the European audience. New dates for the postponed games will likely be set after the All-Star break.
