Chris Paul’s powerful words for the Spurs, who gave him much more than just a season

Chris Paul doesn’t forget those who helped extend his career. After signing with the Los Angeles Clippers for what could be his final NBA season, the 40-year-old legendary point guard wanted to pay tribute to the San Antonio Spurs, the organization that allowed him to prove he still belonged in the league.
« Thank you so much to the Spurs and their organization. »

A symbolic return made possible by the Spurs
During an event at the Intuit Dome to celebrate his return, Paul emphasized the importance of his time in Texas: « Without that year in San Antonio, if that hadn’t happened, » he admits. « I wouldn’t have this opportunity to come back here and play this year, » he stated emotionally.
The 2024-2025 season with the Spurs, despite a modest record (34 wins, 48 losses), was crucial for Paul. The veteran played all 82 games, averaging 8.8 points, 7.4 assists, and 3.6 rebounds. At his age, he proved he remained reliable.
Victor Wembanyama, who benefited from Paul’s mentorship, highlighted the point guard’s total commitment: « It’s incredible how he never does things halfway, » he notes. « He really tries to win, to find solutions. I think that’s really unique – a trait you find in all these players who stay for years and years.«
Paul shared a heartfelt message on Instagram thanking the Spurs: « Grateful for this journey. Thank you to the San Antonio Spurs organization, Coach Pop, Coach Mitch, my teammates, coaching staff, and the amazing fans for welcoming me this past season. Proud to have been part of a franchise with such rich history and bright future. »
His return to the Clippers goes beyond a simple comeback. Between 2011 and 2017, he left his mark on the franchise by becoming the all-time leader in assists (4,023) and steals (775), embodying the « Lob City » era. He now joins an ambitious team for what could be his 21st and final season.
The experience gained in San Antonio, in a structured and supportive environment, could weigh in his quest for a title. As he said in December: « San Antonio has just been incredible. The fans have been incredible, the staff, the team. »
