Thomas Heurtel’s return to ASVEL not expected before late October

EuroLeague - Thomas Heurtel has not yet played with ASVEL. The Agde native, who returned during the offseason, is still in civilian clothes at the start of the season and his return is not expected before the end of the month.

Having returned to ASVEL this summer, Thomas Heurtel (1.89m, 36) hasn’t participated in any preseason games and remains unavailable since the start of the official season. According to Le Progrès, his return to play isn’t expected before late October due to a calf injury. The Agde native will have to wait longer before returning to the court in ASVEL’s jersey, having already undergone minor knee surgery during the offseason.

Meanwhile, the absence of his playmaking profile is being felt in Pierric Poupet’s roster.

De Colo alone in playmaking

Against Valencia this Wednesday (77-80 loss), Nando De Colo (1.95m, 38) was started for the first time since the 2023-2024 season in the Lyon starting lineup. The Northern Frenchman delivered a complete performance (4 assists, 5 fouls drawn) but seemed isolated in this role.

Glynn Watson Jr. stands out more for his scoring abilities, while Shaquille Harrison is mainly known for his defense. As a result, ASVEL only recorded 13 assists against Valencia, an insufficient number at this level.

A glaring need to fill

Thomas Heurtel’s return could prove decisive in smoothing out ASVEL’s offense. An experienced point guard capable of running the offense and providing variety in playmaking, this excellent pick & roll player is expected to support De Colo in a key area.

Without him, ASVEL will need to find quick solutions to avoid falling behind in both Betclic ELITE and EuroLeague.
