After an exceptional season with Zalgiris Kaunas, the French point guard signed with ASVEL on a four-year contract estimated at 16 million euros. Despite interest from several European powerhouses, including Panathinaikos Athens, his priority for now is to wait and see how the situation in Villeurbanne develops. ASVEL is working on its end to recover the planned budget and thus secure its star off-season signing.

Among the clubs keeping a close eye on Sylvain Francisco’s situation is Panathinaikos Athens. The Greek club had already attempted to attract the French point guard earlier in June. At that time, the absence of an officially appointed head coach on the Panathinaikos bench had weighed on discussions. As a point guard, Sylvain Francisco wanted to be able to speak directly with his potential future coach before making a decision. Željko Obradović had not yet been appointed by the Athenian club at that point.

According to L’Équipe, the club had initially built its projections around a budget of 59 million euros, before presenting a budget of 24 million euros to the DNCCG. An Asian investor expected to contribute a major portion of the funding reportedly failed to provide sufficient guarantees in the eyes of French basketball’s financial regulator.

Tony Parker is now working to enable ASVEL to have the resources originally planned. A favorable outcome would allow the club to definitively secure Sylvain Francisco and, more broadly, a particularly ambitious summer recruitment drive.

ASVEL Must Secure a Roster Built for EuroLeague

The situation indeed goes beyond the sole case of Sylvain Francisco. ASVEL has assembled a particularly costly roster with the ambition of stepping up to a new level in EuroLeague. Nick Weiler-Babb and Armoni Brooks are among the announced signings, as are Both Gach and Yves Pons. Tony Parker had also announced to L’Équipe the signing of Daniel Theis.

ASVEL’s ability to deliver on the budget envisioned for the 2026-2027 season therefore appears crucial to preserving the entire sporting project. For now, Sylvain Francisco is not favoring a departure and is giving the Villeurbanne club time to find a solution.

But after his remarkable season at Zalgiris Kaunas, the French point guard logically has a strong market in EuroLeague. The leading European clubs still seeking a point guard are therefore watching the situation closely, ready to make their move if ASVEL’s project were ultimately to be scaled back.
