Marcus Smart is smiling again. After two complicated years in Memphis and Washington, the former Celtics point guard arrives at the Lakers with the appetite of a player who wants to return to the top. An unexpected renaissance for the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year.
A journey full of obstacles since Boston
The story could have been different. In 2014, Smart was drafted 6th by the Celtics, while the Lakers had the 7th pick and selected Julius Randle. « It’s funny because 12 years ago, I could have come here and now I’m here. Nothing happens by chance, » says the 31-year-old player.
After nine seasons in Boston, where he contributed to five Eastern Conference finals and one NBA final, Smart was traded for Kristaps Porzingis. A painful decision for someone who didn’t want to leave the Celtics. « I wanted to help them win a title. I even applauded when they beat Luka Doncic and the Mavericks in five games last year, » he admits.
The last two seasons were tough. Between shoulder injuries in Memphis and his dispensable player status in Washington, Smart saw his career stagnate. « I’m very motivated. These last two years have been disappointing with injuries that stopped and slowed me down, » he regrets.
Luka Doncic’s influence on his arrival
Luka Doncic recruited Smart by calling his agent after his release. « Playing for a historic franchise and wearing the purple and gold jersey is a dream, » says Smart. « Playing with LeBron and Doncic is great. »
Doncic expects Smart to teach him about defense. Despite being 6’3″, Smart uses his wingspan and weight to disrupt all positions.
Ambitious Lakers for a fresh start
Smart isn’t coming to the Lakers to be a figurehead. « We can compete for the title. Our ceiling is high. We have no limits, » he says. « If we do what we need to do, we have a real opportunity. »
At 31, he still has energy. « People think I’m not the same player anymore. Now, I’m where I need to be, » concludes Smart.
