Separated since the summer of 2024, Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns have lost none of their chemistry. Present at the Fanatics Fest in New York, the Timberwolves star shed light on the NBA Finals: before every game of the series between the Knicks and the Spurs, he called his former teammate to slip him a few tactical tips.

A Valuable Edge Built Against the Spurs

The approach made perfect sense. While the Knicks had faced San Antonio only three times during the season — twice in the regular season and once in the NBA Cup final — the Wolves had crossed paths with Mitch Johnson’s squad nine times. Anthony Edwards therefore knew their habits inside and out, including those of Victor Wembanyama.

“I talked to him before every game because we played San Antonio a lot. I was giving him little tips, especially about the players, their habits, which side they prefer to attack from… and about Wemby. I gave him a little cheat code, he passed the test, so major respect to KAT.”

Help that clearly paid off, as the Knicks went on to win the series in five games. KAT was able to make the most of that support, though one might wonder how much weight those exchanges actually carried in the New Yorkers’ ultimate success.

A Friendship Intact Despite the Separation

After New York’s championship, Towns wasted no time calling the man who had supported him throughout the series. Edwards recalls picking up his phone in the middle of the night: “It must have been three in the morning when KAT FaceTimed me after the game.” An anecdote that illustrates just how strong the bond between the two All-Stars has remained despite Towns’ trade to New York in the summer of 2024.

Teammates for four seasons in Minnesota, the two players had formed one of the most exciting offensive duos in the league before the franchise decided to split them up. Just minutes after the title was won, KAT paid a heartfelt tribute to his former partner: “A huge thank you to all my former teammates. A special thought for my brother Anthony Edwards. I talk to him all the time. These guys made me better — a better leader, a better player, and a better man. I will be forever grateful to them.”

This revelation from Edwards also speaks volumes about the fear Wembanyama already inspires around the league. If teams are searching for the smallest detail to try to attack him more effectively, the French big man already represents an extraordinary defensive challenge. And while Ant-Man has yet to claim a championship title himself, he can at least take credit for playing a role — however discreet — in the Knicks‘ triumph.
