Killian Hayes, born in Florida but raised in France thanks to his father DeRon Hayes's professional career, grew up with his eyes glued to those videos that fueled his passion for spectacular basketball.
From a very young age at Cholet Basket, his father's club, Hayes stood out for his ability to compete against older players. This precocity led him to make his senior team debut at just 16 years old, a remarkable feat that speaks to his exceptional talent. Despite interest from INSEP in Paris, he chose to remain loyal to Cholet on the sound advice of his parents, favoring a gradual development path.
His move to ratiopharm Ulm in 2019-2020 marked a crucial step in his European development. That experience in Germany refined his court vision and point guard skills, qualities that caught the attention of NBA scouts. Being selected 7th overall in the 2020 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons crowned this methodical rise.
Recognized for his exceptional court vision and playmaking abilities, Hayes embodies the French school of intelligent basketball. His journey has not been without turbulence, including a six-game suspension handed down by the French Federation for missing the 2019 U20 European Championship, revealing the tensions between personal ambitions and national obligations.
